When should one shoulder the burden of responsibility? The choice lies between paying the price upfront or deferring it until later, where the consequences tend to be more profound.
If you're familiar with my character, you know that I readily embrace accountability for my actions or inaction. I won't provide excuses either, as people seldom wish to hear them, and I refuse to surrender my power to circumstance. Instead, I take full ownership.
There have been moments when I've been criticized for being overly critical of myself. I acknowledge that this may sometimes appear to be the case. However, since I've learned the art of self-forgiveness, I've become capable of recovering without subjecting myself to self-inflicted misery. It might take a day or two, but I always bounce back.
Lately, I found myself tolerating a certain situation, silently condoning unacceptable behavior, all while hoping for a miraculous turnaround. This behavior felt entirely inauthentic to me, and it had repercussions not just on me but on others as well.
Ultimately, I did shoulder the responsibility, but it came at a cost that affected both me and those around me. The lesson I've taken away from this experience is crystal clear: assume responsibility in the moment. Delaying accountability benefits no one. It may sound appealing and even appear admirable, but trust me, no one benefits from belatedly accepting responsibility. From this point forward, I'm committed to not settling, not tolerating, not giving tacit approval, and not relying on hope for improvement.
The essential question I ask myself now is, "Who must I become to be responsible in this very moment?"
